What a nice weekend; three times, people stopped by my house to give me softscape. How often does that happen? I spent most of the weekend working in my yard. It doesn’t matter what kind of plants you use, because container gardening is, of course, all about the container! Do you like terra cotta, stone, wood, or perhaps more unconventional materials? The container in which you plant your softscape will define both the softscape within as well as the part of your yard in which the container resides. With container gardens, I can grow cacti here in New England, control the spread of some very lovely but invasive softscape and grow a salad on my balcony. Container gardens solve all kinds of problems; take mint for example. We once planted some mint and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to dig that stuff up. Container gardens are a wonderful option for people who like to rearrange things. If something in my yard isn’t just right, I can move containers till I’m happy with it. And if a container garden isn’t thriving in one spot, I’ll try another. By midsummer, your greenery may have faded. While browsing at a local home improvement store, I came across a huge assortment of very reasonably priced little succulents. My first thought? Container garden! There were so many varieties of succulents to choose from. I decided on five distinct plants, a shallow planter and some succulent potting mix. How would you define softscape? Simply, you might say that softscape includes the living parts of a landscape. But if you’ve been reading my articles, you’ll know I can’t just leave it at that. Yes, softscape is the live, botanical elements of a yardscape. It includes green plants, flowering plants, trees & shrubs, grasses, groundcover and vines.
